Moving and Medicare Coverage

Recently, we've been working with a number of clients who are moving and want to understand how their Medicare coverage changes. If you have a Medicare Supplement plan, your coverage will generally remain the same but you will want to change your Part D Prescription Drug plan as those are zip code based. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, you will need to change your plan because those are also zip code based and your providers could be considered "out of network" resulting in higher costs. If you move outside your plan's service area you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. First thing you should do when moving is notify Social Security and they will relay the information to Medicare. You will want to log in to your Medicare account to verify the change. The best time to update your address is 30 days prior to moving to avoid lapse in coverage.
